FLUOROPOLYMER RESINS

PTFE

Polytetrafluoroethylene is a versatile high temperature, low friction, chemically inert, high dielectric strength material.  It can be supplied in very thin wall tubing for electrical applications and heavy wall for pressurized chemical transfer.  Tubing and insulated wire are made by a hydraulic ram extruder using a “preform” of fine powder compressed with a lubricant.  The lubricant is driven off and the resin is sintered in a tubular oven.  The size of the preform(s) loaded into the extruder determines the maximum continuous length of tubing or wire.  Markel has the largest capacity machine available to provide long continuous lengths of high-precision products.  Specific grades of resin must be selected to provide the highest performance in products such as coaxial cable dielectric, high-pressure hose liners and ultra low permeation fuel hose.  Markel specializes in using fillers to enhance mechanical performance in push pull control cables and in supporting thin wall PTFE tubing with a bonded jacket of nylon.  Conductive liner is available for electrostatic dissipation.

PFA

Perfluoroalkoxy is a melt extrudable high performance resin with performance characteristics very close to PTFE.  Maximum service temperature is 260° C (500° F).  Melt extrusion yields unlimited continuous lengths.  A high purity grade is available for use in integrated circuit production.  Markel specializes in adding fillers to enhance characteristics such as heat transfer that has been increased by 3 times.

HIGH PERFORMANCE FEP

Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene is a melt extrudable high performance resin with a maximum operating temperature significantly below that of PTFE and PFA.  It is chemically inert to most industrial chemicals.  FEP has greater optic clarity making it useful in sight gauges and UV water disinfection systems.  High resistance to stress in long-term exposure to high temperature caustic chemicals sets this resin apart from the standard performance grade of FEP tubing.  Markel specializes in blending fillers with FEP to enhance mechanical performance.  One example is to increase heat transfer by a factor of 3X.

PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS:
·      Maximum service temperature 204° C (400° F)
High molecular weight resin resists stress cracking
Chemically inert to most industrial chemicals and solvents
      High thermal stability
      Low permeability
      FDA compliant
      Moisture absorption practically zero
      No odor or taste

STANDARD FEP

Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene has many of the same characteristics as the high performance grade with the exception of long-term chemical stress resistance.  It is chemically inert and does not add odor or taste to water in disinfection applications.  Good UV transmittance at 254mm makes it an excellent candidate for UV bulb protection sleeves and coils.

 PVDF

Polyvinylidene Fluoride is a melt-processed resin used extensively in the high purity semiconductor market that requires tubing with low extractibles.  Resistance to halogens and acids makes it popular in the pulp and paper industry.  High resistance to gamma radiation and hot acids makes it suitable for nuclear waste processing.  Resistance to ozone makes it suitable for use in water purification systems.  Two grades of flexible PVDF are available at the sacrifice of about 40° C in operating temperature but with improved impact and elongation properties at ambient and low temperatures.

PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS:
·      Operating temperature 150° C (302° F)
      Flammability:  UL94V-O (self-extinguishing)
Does not support growth of fungi
High resistance to chemical stress cracking

APPLICATIONS:
·      DI water delivery in semiconductor manufacturing
Chemical delivery in pulp and paper production
      Nuclear waste processing
      Ozone delivery
